The Two Building Blocks: Server License and CALs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A Windows Server deployment has two parts. First, the server license, which is priced per physical core: you must license at least 8 cores per processor and at least 16 cores per server, in 2-core packs. Second, CALs: every user or device that accesses the server’s services needs a CAL, with exceptions for external users under the External Connector model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you rent a Windows server from a hosting provider, the provider usually covers the server license through the SPLA program (more below) \u2014 you typically do not buy core licenses yourself. On a rented single server running one operating system, Standard is the relevant edition in almost every case. Datacenter earns its price only when you are virtualizing heavily on your own hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Many Cores Do You Need to License?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A quick worked example. A two-socket server with two 12-core processors needs 24 licensed cores (12 per processor, comfortably above the 8-core minimum). A single-socket 16-core server also needs 16 cores \u2014 which happens to be the per-server minimum, so it is the cheapest legal configuration. Hyper-threaded logical processors do not count; only physical cores matter, and you can never license fewer than 8 cores per processor. On rented hardware the provider does this math for you, which is why 16-core configurations dominate hosting quotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pick user CALs when your team roams between machines; pick device CALs when shifts share terminals. For publicly exposed services, the External Connector license covers external (non-employee) access in a single per-server fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
