A default IIS installation is built for developer convenience, not security. Before you serve a single request to the public, you need to lock down the server, isolate applications, and configure the right security headers. This guide covers the production-hardening steps that every Windows admin should apply. Each module is a potential attack surface. Everything else should be evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Configure Request Filtering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Request Filtering blocks malicious requests before they reach your application. If one pool crashes or is compromised, the others keep running. Configure each pool with:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Identity:<\/strong> ApplicationPoolIdentity (not LocalSystem)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Load User Profile:<\/strong> False (avoids profile bloat)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recycling:<\/strong> Regular time interval (e.g., 1740 minutes = 29 hours) + virtual memory limit<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rapid-Fail Protection:<\/strong> Enabled with 5 failures in 5 minutes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":2} -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Enable Failed Request Tracing<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Failed Request Tracing (FREB) captures detailed XML logs of failed requests.
