Application-Aware Backups with wbadmin and VSS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By default <code>wbadmin start backup -allCritical<\/code> invokes VSS and includes the system state, which covers AD, the registry, and boot files. To back up a full volume plus system state:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\\\backup-share\\vps$ -include:C: -allCritical -vssFull -quiet<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><code>-vssFull<\/code> forces a true full VSS snapshot and truncates logs (important for SQL\/Exchange).<\/li><li><code>-allCritical<\/code> includes the volumes required for bare-metal recovery.<\/li><li>Omit <code>-vssFull<\/code> for <code>-vssCopy<\/code> behavior, which does not truncate the source application&#8217;s logs \u2014 use when another system already owns log truncation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For SQL Server specifically, WSB gives you VSS-level consistency, but <code>BACKUP DATABASE<\/code> or a maintenance plan remains the reliable restore path for point-in-time recovery. Application-aware backup protects the database files; native SQL backups protect the transaction log chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Scheduling with Task Scheduler<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Register a nightly job that writes an incremental-style set and emails on failure.
